What is Yoga Therapy or Yoga Based Counseling?

​

My offering of yoga therapy involves an exploration of Yoga philosophy based on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali combined with modern therapeutic approaches such as Acceptance Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy skills and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy. Through this process, you will learn how you can incorporate the 8 limbs of Yoga into everyday life. Our sessions include:

  • A physical practice of yoga postures (asana)

  • Breathwork (pranayama)

  • Meditation and Mindfulness  (pratyahara,  dharana, dhyana)

  • Self Introspection and discussion about key concepts in the Yoga Sutras (svadhyaya) that are helpful to living a purposeful and fulfilling life.

How to begin

Discovery Call

  • Schedule a no obligation 15 min call with me. (I am not a salesperson, so I promise there will be no attempt to “sell” you this service. I believe in order to reap the benefits of this process, you will need to come to it without pressure and a willingness to be open.)

  • I’ll ask you why you are interested in starting this process and what you hope to gain.

  • Ask me any questions you may have and I’ll try my best to answer them.

  • If we are the right fit for one another and if you’re eager to begin, we can schedule our first session together.

  • If you need more time to process, I respect that decision and will be here when you are ready.

The Process

Initial Meeting

  • We discuss the circumstances that brought you to me, your goals and expectations, providing me with a clearer understanding of what your needs are and how this process could work for you.

  • I will share with you the basic framework that I follow and discuss any questions or concerns you may have.  

 

Subsequent Sessions

I recommend that for at least the first 8 weeks we meet on a weekly basis. This allows for consistency in establishing your daily practice. You will be assigned "homework" between sessions to cultivate self discipline (tapas) in living your Yoga.  


NOTE: These sessions are not intended to provide focused psychotherapeutic support for specific mental health conditions as we will not venture deep into the processing of the struggles associated. If it becomes apparent that you may need individual psychotherapy to address any mental health concerns, I will provide you with recommendations of other mental health therapists who can provide you the specific treatment you require.

 

Duration 

The length of your journey with me is entirely up to you. However, I highly recommend a commitment of at least 8 weeks together as there is much to learn and practice. After the initial 8 weeks, you may decide to continue with me on a weekly basis or extend the time between our meetings as it fits your schedule and budget. Having the option of reducing the frequency of your weekly sessions to alternating weeks or a monthly schedule provides you more time to independently apply the knowledge you’ve gained and reflect on its impacts. As you progress in your journey, I also offer 30 min sessions virtually or in person to further support your growth.

 

Ending Counseling

Deciding when to formally end our sessions will be based on your progress towards your goals. My objective is for you to feel empowered and able to confidently sustain what you’ve learned in our sessions together in your daily life.
